Ealing CC Academy Match Report & Scorecard

Ealing CC Academy v Barmy Army U13's

Played at Met Police Ground, Bushey, Herts on Friday August 8th 2008

A damp and cloudy day did not deter the young cricketers taking part from producing a fantastic game of cricket. Batting first on a wet pitch, Ealing Academy were indebted to a superb innings of 75 from 11 year old Louie Millman. Having made the Middlesex U11 team this season, young Louie showed maturity and studious shot selection to bat right through the innings playing seam and spin with equal aplomb.

Louie was ably supported by the elegant strokeplay of Harry Podmore who was unlucky to be brilliantly caught one handed off a whipped pull stroke, and Josh Tupper who showed excellent timing in making 30 batting at No.4. As is often the case, the Academy didn't quite make the most of the last 10 overs where wickets fell too regularly but 187 was a good effort on a bowler-friendly pitch. Off spinner Guyan bowled beautifully for Barmy Army and the prodigious turn he extracted augured well for the plentiful supply of Ealing spinners.

Ealing Academy opened with the pace of Harry Podmore and the swing of Karan Bamrah and an early breakthrough occurred as Bamrah trapped opener George LBW. Harry Podmore struggled with his direction and was replaced by Shaneil Patel who immediately demonstrated why he is rated the most accurate bowler in Middlesex youth cricket, bowling 4 overs for 7 runs.

Barmy Army batsmen Charlie and Henry batted well to take their team to 96 before the return of Bamrah, after spin had failed to work the oracle for Ealing, saw Charlie chip a low catch to Josh Tupper at extra cover for a solid 38. At 143 for 2 the game looked won for Barmy Army but some inspired bowling from Bamrah and Patel saw them collapse to 173 for 7 with 3 overs left. Harry Podmore's pace had proved too much for a couple of the Barmy Army lower order but he had conceded boundaries.

Thus the last over fell to Robert Bentley and his canny offspin. With 3 balls left and 4 needed to win, the game was in the balance but the big hitting Alex smacked a ball to long on and the winning runs arrived for Barmy Army. Despite the disappointment of losing, Ealing Academy showed tremendous fight against a side replete with county players from all over the country and the seam bowling of young Bamrah and Patel was a joy to behold.
