Ealing CC Academy Match Report & Scorecard
Ealing CC 1st XI v Ealing CC Academy
Played at Corfton Road on April 13th 2009
As firm underdogs, the Academy came out fighting against the Ealing 1st XI, Oli Wilkin's first ball bouncer inducing a mis-timed pull shot which fell agonisingly short of Mid-On. Raminder Singh, playing in his first Academy match against the Club, produced a wonderful delivery to remove the dangerous Sameer Patel in the 4th over, repeating the ball a minute later to dismiss Lane first ball.
Khan and Holt however recovered well, waiting patiently through some good spells of bowling from the Academy seamers, pouncing on rare loose deliveries. The score crept past 80 after 17 overs, before a loose shot from the Captain produced a top edged catch to Ashok at Cover. Peploe, never run-shy against the Academy, timed the impeccably, but was unable to dominate any of the bowlers: Avi Anand's leg-spin controlling one end, whilst 12 year-old Shaneil Patel blocked-up the other with his medium pace.
Patel's relentless wicket-to-wicket seamers finally broke the patience, as Hass Khan drove to Cover two balls after reaching a maiden Ealing half-century. Manjo Singh was next on the youngster's list as he was caught down the leg-side for 0, before Peploe cut loosly to backward point for 34 to complete a more than impressive handful of wickets for the young bowler, finishing with figures of 8-1-30-3.
Never able to recover from 140 - 6, the Club lost wickets regularly in the last 10 overs - Afridi caught at Mid-On off the bowling of Avi Anand, Steve Scott run out for six, and the big-hitting Leigh Parry playing all round a yorker before he could clear the ropes. Chris Glasper treated the handful of spectators to his own brand of batting and some more than questionable running between the wickets, before being run out for 10, leaving the home side 181 all out with five balls left to spare.
At least 20 runs short on a decent batting track, the Ealing opening bowlers had to make significant inroads with the new ball. Leigh Parry removed Ajay Soni in the 4th over with a good ball and an even better catch at slip by Peploe, but were immediately on the defensive thanks to some audacious and confident strokes from Chris Wakefield. Three slips were reduced to two, and then to just one as Mid-Off and Extra-Cover retreated hastily to the boundary, Wakefield and Wilkin sharing an unbeaten 93 run partnership at drinks, leaving just 85 required off the remaining 20 overs.
Never left out of the game long, Peploe struck with his second ball after the intermission, trapping Wakefield LBW for a fine 52. Anand Ashok came to the crease at 101-2, but never looked settled against spin, the required rate of 4.5 edging over 5's and on towards 6 runs-per-over very quickly. Captain Mylo Wilkin passed 50, but was stumped off the bowling of Singh, leaving the Academy 130 - 3. Wickets started to tumble as the experienced heads in the field turned the proverbial screw on the Academy middle order, Huw Jones being caught in the deep, Amann Soni caught behind cutting, and Anand Ashok driving to Extra-Cover on 28. With the run rate now up to eight-an-over, the game looked all but lost, Raminder Singh edging to keeper Scott for seven, Harry Podmore unable to make his ground returning for an impossible two to Fine-Leg. Avi Anand was unable to hit the last two balls for the requisite 12 runs, the visitors falling 10 runs short after their 40 overs. Inexperience showed in the middle order, but a lot will have been learnt from a game the Academy definitely should have won; but with less than a week to go before their next crack at the 1st XI, the side will feel like they will never have a better chance to attain that elusive victory on Sunday.
