Ealing CC Academy Match Report & Scorecard
Ealing CC Academy v Kingston University
Played at Corfton Road on Saturday April 19th 2008
This new fixture brought young and old together to represent Ealing Academy against ex-Ealing player Sumi Anand’s university team. Ealing Academy made first use of a decent pitch and pads were still being unstrapped when poor Aaman Soni nicked his first ball straight to 1st slip to make an unfortunate duck. Poacher turned gamekeeper Nalin Jayasinghe showed the right spirit and along with Gagandeep Jauhar took the total to 72 before both fell in the 30’s.
Coach Peter Wellings walked in to some expectation and then proceeded to top edge a dirty long hop straight in the air whilst still on 0. His surprise at seeing the routine chance spilled was matched by the Kingston players and along with Richard Chatterton, the old dog helped Academy get up to the competitive total of 189 for 6 with Wello out for 50 and Richard, no longer the rabbit of old, a very useful 38 not out.
The Kingston side was a full adult side so Ealing Academy knew they’d have to be on their mettle and Jugal Suthar slid one through the defences of Porter to gain an early wicket. At 60 for 1 with 23 overs left, the university side were in a good position when 13 year old Hussain Ali-Adnan entered the fray.
Bowling up the hill, the young bespectacled seamer found an immaculate line and length from the start and troubled the Kingston batsmen. Captain Wakely tried a big drive to be bowled securing Hussain’s first wicket. The very next ball, a plumb LBW saw 2 wickets in 2 balls for the tyro paceman and the chance of a hat-trick. Captain Avi Anand crowded the Kingston No.5 and the tension mounted as Hussain ran in for his hat-trick ball. A beautifully pitched off cutter found the edge of the bat and a low catch headed what seemed to be 5 feet to Peter Wellings’ right hand at first slip.
In what appeared to be slow motion – in fact it probably was – the Academy coach dived full length to scoop the ball up 1 inch off the ground. Hussain had his hat-trick, and the hugs and celebrations showed what a fantastic moment it was for a youngster making his way in the game. Not content with that, he bowled unchanged for a full 8 overs taking 3 more wickets finishing with the astonishing figures of 8 overs, 1 maiden, 6 for 16 – the best figures by an Ealing Colt in an adult match that any of us can remember.
Debutant Paarth Darbar weighed in with a couple of wickets at the end with his leg breaks finishing with figures of 2 for 1 and Kingston were bowled out for 99 leaving Ealing Academy victors by 90 runs. The only sour note was that due to being 5 years younger than the legal drinking age, Hussain was unable to buy the traditional 5 wickets+ jug of ale that the rest of the team were so much looking forward to.
