Ealing CC Academy v Middlesex U16's
Played at Corfton Road on Thursday June 26th 2008
An unbeaten record in 2008 gave the Academy much confidence going in to the annual game against the county's under 16 team. On a good pitch, Middlesex elected to bat first and some wayward new ball bowling allied to sensible batting from openers Brandreth & Creese gave the county a solid start. Creese played a range of pleasing shots and when joined by Ventham, the game began to get away from the Academy.
Paarth Darbar bowled nicely with his flicked legspin as did 13 year old Harry Podmore but the other ECC Academy bowlers struggled to bowl a consistent line and length. Ajay Soni did well at the end of the innings but some sloppy out cricket combined with a terrible 53 extras saw the Academy chasing 272 to win in 50 overs.
The Ealing innings began calamitously as senior batsman Mylo Wilkin was castled for just 2 and Chris Wakefield ran himself out for 0. When Ajay Soni was caught after struggling to get the ball off the square, the Academy were 6 for 3 in 8 overs and staring down the barrel. A brave 24 from skipper Oli Wilkin at least gave them some momentum but a flurry of wickets saw the scoreboard reading 61 for 7. Enter the Podmore brothers Alex and Harry. Some sensible application from Alex brought the best out of his younger brother and together the pair put on 62 for the 8th wicket with Harry in particular unfurling some beautifully crafted strokes and his 39 represented the Academy's highest score of the match.
Ealing finally subsided for 136 which gave them a modicum of respectability but in truth this was a bitterly disappointing performance from a talented side who in no way did themselves justice and they know they must do better next time.
