Ealing CC Academy Match Report & Scorecard
Ealing CC Academy v St Paul's School 1st XI
Played on April 14th 2009
After losing the toss and being put in the field, Ealing Academy made the most of a helpful wicket and slow outfield - Raminder Singh continued his testing line and lengths from the weekend, picking up two wickets in four overs, including the St Pauls' captain and star batsman for just nine. The other three seamers were wicketless, but misely in their economy rate, St Pauls managing just 59 off the first 20 overs. Young seamer Taz Khaled picked up his first senior Academy wicket, bowling the home side's number four for 26. St Pauls' recovered a little, albeit slowly as the spinners went to work on a big-turning wicket. Oscar Dewhurst waited patiently till his sixth over before inducing a rash shot from Sam Cato on 39, before Rob Bentley had Harry Browne, St Pauls's top scorer, caught competently by Raminder Singh on the Mid-Wicket boundary for 41.
In an attempt to increase the scoring rate in the final few overs, the lower order appeared all at sea against Bentley, who finally finished with more than impressive figures of 8-0-37-3, as the home side struggled to 166 - 9 off their 40 overs.
The Academy reply, in direct contrast, started with a succession of boundaries from the middle of Chris Wakefield's bat. The total raced past 30 in the 4th over, but it was one shot too many for Wakefield as a slog sweep resulted in a top edged catch to Mid-Wicket. Nabeel Awan, entrusted with a number three batting spot, joined captain Mylo Wilkin, and the pair patiently accumulated 50 in the next 10 overs, before spin was introduced and Awan decided to go big. Very big. Two fours and a huge six took him into the forties, and a couple of lusty blows through the covers brought up a maiden Academy century.
Wilkin too reached his second fifty in as many days with an on-drive to the boundary, but the century partnership was broken as Awan top-edged a pull to Long-Leg on 57. Soni (5 not out) and Wilkin (71 not out) finished the chase off in style as the hosts looked well and truly defeated, losing by 8 wickets with over 12 overs to spare. Another impressive match for the Academy, a side with many younger members of the squad, several of whom showed a great deal of skill and will have really done a lot towards being in contention for the senior sides.
